Adoption Procedures

There is a $60 NON-REFUNDABLE FEE for all animals which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. If the animal is not spayed or neutered there is a $35 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT upon proof of surgery. An adoption application must be filled out at the Shelter by the person wishing to adopt the animal. Once the application has been reviewed and approved the potential adopter may visit and meet any of the animals.

If you live in Genesee County, all dogs must be licensed BEFORE leaving the Shelter. Please note that public offices that license dogs are not open on the weekends. All dogs must leave the Shelter on a leash. Please bring a leash.

All animals older than 3 months of age are given rabies vaccine. Unless there is proof of a prior rabies vaccine, the vaccine is good for one year. All animals are given at least one dose of deworming medication. All dogs receive a parvo/distemper vaccine which is good for one year.

Spay It Forward!

Volunteers For Animals has paid for the animals to be spayed or neutered before they are adopted. Please consider making a donation towards our spay/neuter program. 100% of your donation will be used to spay or neuter animals from Genesee County. Donations are tax deductible!

Before You Adopt

You may want to take the time to read the Dog Adoption Bible provided free to the public by Mike Rogers. You may download it, share it and/or print it at no charge. It is specifically written for those who are adopting a dog for the first time but it can be helpful for everyone. The book was written to help keep shelter dogs in great homes which is what we all want to see.

  • 2-1/2 year old Boxer/Hound Mix

  • Female/Spayed

Lulu is a lovely, energetic girl who would love to be everyone’s friend. She is more than willing to meet you, take you for a stroll and allow you to pet her.

2-3 year-old/Rottweiler/Male/Neutered

Blaze came to us as a stray. He absolutely loves people, but doesn't get along well with all dogs. He would do best as an only dog in a home with no cats or young children. He seems to do well in a crate.

Blaze has been through basic obedience training and will need adopters who are willing to keep up with his training exercises. A Rochester-based behaviorist has volunteered some free follow-up services for him. He should also be in a home with people who have experience with Rottweilers, or large dog breeds.  Blaze will thrive in a structured environment with owners who are familiar with the breed.

  • 1-1/2 year old Pit Bull Terrier Mix

  • Female/Spayed

Josie is an adorable little lady who seeks your affection and loves long walks. She came to us as a stray, but has had no problems getting along with everyone. She is full of energy, and will need your help learning to be a good girl.

5 year old/Pit Bull Terrier Mix/Female/Spayed

Mia is a sweet little lady, considering she was not in the greatest condition when she came to us. She has put on weight and is looking good. She enjoys walks and being with people, but should probably be your only pet. Mia also seems to be housebroken.
