Adoption Procedures

Volunteers For Animals periodically pulls dogs for other shelters in need of moving animals to avoid euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals. We are able to do this through the generosity of many people such as the originating shelter staff, transporters, foster volunteers and others who help with pulling fees, vet bills and finding good homes once they are here.

The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the rescues animals can range from $50 to $150 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS.

If you are interested in any of these dogs, please email. Do not call the Shelter regarding rescue animals - they have no information. All rescue animals are in foster homes with volunteers - NOT at the Shelter - unless otherwise noted.

Vaccinations

All animals older than 3 months of age are given rabies vaccine. Unless there is proof of a prior rabies vaccine, the vaccine is good for one year. All animals are given at least one dose of deworming medication. All dogs receive a parvo/distemper vaccine which is good for one year.

Spay It Forward!

Volunteers For Animals has paid for the animals to be spayed or neutered before they are adopted. Please consider making a donation towards our spay/neuter program. 100% of your donation will be used to spay or neuter animals from Genesee County. Donations are tax deductible!

Before You Adopt

You may want to take the time to read the Dog Adoption Bible provided free to the public by Mike Rogers. You may download it, share it and/or print it at no charge. It is specifically written for those who are adopting a dog for the first time but it can be helpful for everyone. The book was written to help keep shelter dogs in great homes which is what we all want to see.

Aspen621.jpg

Aspen

1-1/2 year old Hound/Terrier Female/Spayed

Aspen is a high energy dog that does best with ample exercise and direction. She is very affectionate. She craves attention and would do well with a household that supports her accomplishments and provides strong leadership.  She behaves very well when she is given positive reinforcement when she does what she is asked.  Aspen is a graduate of the Path to Home prison program. She has had basic dog obedience training and wants to please. She enjoys the company of other dogs and would benefit from a consistent household,  coupled with guidance. (Her adoption fee is $200.)

Zeus

10 months Hound Mix/Male/Neutered

Zeus is a graduate of the Path to Home prison program and did very well.  He is a friendly and energetic boy who enjoys his people and other dogs.  He does best playing with other dogs when there are no toys present.   His handler at the prison has said that when Zeus is not playing with him or the other dogs, he is pretty “chill” a lot of the time.   His picture does not do him justice as he is much more handsome in person. (His adoption fee is $200.)
